Dr. Bill Schindler is an experimental archaeologist, primitive technologist, chef, and acclaimed author, dedicated to reviving ancestral food traditions for modern life. As an Associate Professor in Anthropology and Archaeology at Washington College, he founded and directs the Eastern Shore Food Lab, a unique interdisciplinary initiative merging ancient foodways, experimental archaeology, and culinary innovation.
Bill’s work has captivated a global audience through roles in National Geographic’s The Great Human Race and the Curiosity Stream series The Modern Stone Age Family, as well as WIRED’s Basic Instincts and Food Science. He is the author of Eat Like a Human, a compelling guide that reimagines well-being through the lens of prehistoric nourishment.
Bill’s teachings, rooted in immersive “soul authorship” experiences, challenge students and the public alike to rediscover how our ancestors shaped food, technology, and survival. From foraging with the Hadza in Tanzania to traditional cheesemaking in Ireland, his fieldwork spans continents and cultures.
Together with his wife Christina, he runs the Modern Stone Age Kitchen, a hands-on culinary venture where traditional techniques—fermentation, butchery, and more—are used to create deeply nourishing meals for today. With a Ph.D. from Temple University and numerous media features—including NPR, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Sapiens, and The London Times—Dr. Schindler continues to inspire a worldwide audience to think differently about how—and why—we eat.
